WSO2 Builds Heavy Metal Web Services

WSO2 is an open source middleware startup with an unusual geographic footprint. Founded in in 2005 by former IBM web services guru Sanjiva Weerawarana, the company’s employees are split between Boston, Portsmouth UK, and Colombo, Sri Lanka.
WSO2’s offerings are based on the open source Apache Axis 2 project, and the company employees several key Apache developers. WSO2’s flagship product, Tungsten, is an application server optimized from the ground up for web services. Also in the works is an Enterprise Server Bus (ESB) dubbed Titanium. The company offers support, consulting, and training around its products.
WSO2 raised $4M in funding from Intel’s venture arm and was named an open source company to watch by Network World in August. More recently, News.com noted that WS02 hired Jordan Marsh away from Microsoft to serve as possibly the first ever Director of Architecture, Mashup Technologies.
