NameMedia Bets on Virtual Real Estate

A quiet behemoth is growing in Waltham. NameMedia, formerly known as YesDirect, formerly known as BuyDomains.com, has its origins back in 1999 but was recently acquired and infused with cash by Highland Capital Partners and Summit Partners of Boston.
The core NameMedia business is as old as the web itself: domain squatting. But NameMedia doesn’t use so crass a term. The company describes its two lines of business as:
- Direct Search - advertising delivered to users when they type in one of the 650,000+ domain names directly owned by the company, such as photography.com
- Domain Marketplace - a trading platform for domain names owned by the company as well as third parties, amounting to over 1,000,000 domains in all
NameMedia isn’t slowing down. Last week the company named Brian Farrey, formerly the President of Technology at Monster, as its CTO. The company employs over 75 and counting in Waltham.
