LocaModa Hits the Streets

LocaModa is a Somerville firm focused on bridging the gap between mobile phones and the web in unconventional ways. Founded by Stephen Randall, former EVP and Founder at handset software foundry Symbian, and formally known as nVend, LocaModa launched its latest products in March 2006.
LocaModa’s products share the core idea of using conventional mobile phones to control large fixed digital displays in public locations. Current applications include:
- StreetSurfer, which lets any phone serve as a remote control for a public digital display. For example, StreetSurfer has been used to let bypassers browse real estate listings in the store window of the GMAC real estate office in Harvard Square, and to power city guide displays in New York.
- StreetMessenger, the software behind social media application Wiffiti, which lets users text messages from mobile phones to screens in public places such as cafes. Wiffiti was allegedly even the mechanism for a marriage proposal at the Toscanini’s cafe in Cambridge.
Because it’s based on standard text messaging, LocaModa works with any phone or network and requires no software downloads. Check out the videos of LocaModa’s demo pitches from Demo 06 or the Stanford AlwaysOn conference earlier this year to get a first hand feel for how the technology works.
