Gather Brings Together Starbucks Readers
October 12th, 2006 by hubcapper
In a continued effort to bring the social networking phenomenon up market, Boston-based web startup Gather has struck a deal to host an online book community for the Starbucks coffee chain. Gather’s branded community site, part of the broader Starbucks Book Break initiative, allows readers to participate in online discussions with authors and other readers.
When not having his $5M South End penthouse profiled in the home and garden section of regional publications, CEO Tom Gerace is busy cooking up new ways to promote his venture. Gather initially focused its efforts on NPR listeners, thanks no doubt to the influence of chairman and co-founder Bill Kling who is also president and CEO at American Public Media. With a relaunch of the site in July, the company has begun casting a wider net.
In addition to the Starbucks move, Gather has other projects in the works. Later this month, the company will experiment with social networking on the high seas by hosting a five day literary-themed cruise to Bermuda.
